Diary one:

July 1937:
Another day ended in Berkley. As always, I was studying and teaching physics. That was basically my life ever since I came back from Europe with my Ph.D. degree in physics. These days, however, I see somethings are changing. I heard that Japan invaded China few days ago. Although I don’t think it will have a big impact on me for now, since the United States, as always, is employing the neutral policy. President Roosevelt, FDR, that is, is more concerned with dealing the the problems in US for now. Ever since the Great Depression, our nation is having some problems that needs to be dealt with. Although I was not very impacted with it, besides the fact that many goods got harder to buy, I still see that the problems from the Great Depression needs to be dealt with. The other major problem these days, however, is the global issues. As I stated earlier, US probably isn’t going to go into war. What I think is going to happen is that since now Japan is trying to go into war with other nations, US might get involved in some trading that has to do with war. It would be a very dumb idea for any nation to not get involved in wartime trade with other nations. Also, although many Americans want to stay away from the war itself, I think many of them also want US to indirectly impact the war by controlling the US war goods. We are, in fact, one of the superpowers of the world.
Back to the issue with Japan, as I said, I think the US is going to get indirectly involved in the war by selling arms. What that means is that I might somewhat get affected. Since I am one of the leading physics professor at this time, I might get involved in creating new weapons. I wouldn’t mind getting involved in those activities. After all, working with physics is my job. The only question that I have at this moment is why Japan invaded China. I guess their dreaming of creating an empire in Asia exceeds their fear of many strong nations that might want to block them. I heard that an US gunboat named Panay was shot in China and sunk. People say that the Japanese did it, and so does the evidences. If that is true, I’m curious about what the US government will do. Japan these days is the one bringing storm in Asian continent. Japan is constantly bringing conflict in Asia. Who knows, Japan might even try to invade United States one day.

Diary two

December 8th 1941:
Wow, I guess it happened. I wrote that Japan might even try to invade United States some day back in 1937, and it really happened. Japan has invaded Hawaii, and bombed Pearl Harbor. United States was trying the make Japan stop its aggressive behaviors by blocking trade with them, and Japan only became more aggressive. I heard that United States government is getting ready to officially declare war on Japan and get itself involved in World War II. If it happens, then it means that I will get even busier. I can’t just let myself have a comfortable life in Berkley when my country is at war. I constantly hear and read about President Roosevelt and what he will do these days in the newspaper. It says that he is somewhat ill but won’t have much trouble leading our nation in the war.
The world is going crazy these days. I barely imagined that US will be attacked. I heard that more than two thousand people were killed when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Also, I heard that most of the ships and airplanes that were in Pearl Harbor are all destroyed. The only good, or glad, news that I heard about that incident was that many of the aircraft carriers were not in the harbor at the time. the aircraft carriers, without doubt, are the most powerful weapon these days. If those are not destroyed, people say that we still have the chance of winning the war in Asia. I can’t enlist in the army since I am now a professor, and I find myself more useful for the war when I am in a laboratory working on war physics rather than actually fighting in the front line. What I can do for my country at war is making new weapons. As I said, the aircraft carriers are the super weapon these days. However, I have an idea of creating a new super weapon of the century. I think it is possible to make a bomb that is powerful enough to blow up an entire city. If I can get the support from the government, I can make this superior bomb.

I don’t really know what will happen to me, nor the nation that I am living in. Even the world these days are changing rapidly. The only thing that I can do for now is to hope for getting myself involved in some government related activities that can give some help to this nation at war.

Diary Three

October 16, 1941

The war is still going on. The Japanese are winning most of the battles in the Pacific. Japan has also gained a significant land in Indochina, which was formerly occupied by the French. I think Japan will end up keeping that land because France, as I know for now, does not have any ability to defend its colonies abroad since France itself is occupied by the Germans. Although many people worry about how America is continuously losing these days, I don’t think that that will continue to be the case. The United States of America is making much more war goods that the Japanese Empire is, and thus, as long as we don’t get defeated in every single battle without destroying any Japanese ships, we have a good chance of winning. The only reason I think that our troops is not doing so good is only because now the American army was not ready for the war compared to Japanese forces. If time goes by and if we can decide on a strategy where we could actually start to bomb Japan’s mainland, then I think we will end up winning the war, and I think the Japanese know about this too. However, since war is something where anything can happen, I will still keep my eyes on what is going on, and what I can do to help my nation.
so, ever since the war broke out, I have been looking for what I can do to help the US. I was not able to find anything for now, but a physicist has been approaching me these days. His name is Arthur Compton and he is one of the most respected physicians these days. He said that he is involved in some kinda research that he said he cannot reveal for now, but he said he needs me to replace someone named Gregory Breit, also a respected physicist. Although Compton did not give me any specific details about the project he is working on, I highly think that it is some kind of war-related research to help the US to end the war. I personally am looking forward to get involved in that research, since I think this project would be remembered as one of the most secret, and most valuable research of the 20th century. Also, as I said, I want to work for the government, so I think I will take the offer. Compton said that Breit did not quit yet, so I think I will wait for now. If my effort and the project that I will soon be working on can help end the war in our favor, I will do anything. After all, I am a physicist that is trying to make a weapon.

Diary Four

September 2, 1945

So it ended. The World War II has finally ended as Japan signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender today. It was, without doubt, a lasting war that will be remembered, and I was in a big part of it.
The secret project that I mentioned in the diary few years ago, it really was, in fact, the most secret and valuable project of 20th century. It was a project designed to create a super.weapon that can end any war in the favor of US. Well, I am pretty sure that nobody, including me and my fellow researchers, thought it would actually be possible, but we did it. Our intention was to create a bomb that can destroy something like a small village, but the result was a bomb that can destroy a whole city. We tested the bomb in July 16 of this year. I named the testing “Trinity.” Well, what happened just shocked us. The bomb, called the atomic bomb, just destroyed everything that was there. With shock, I said that “Now, I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.”
When President FDR died in April 25th of this year, I was introduced to President Truman, formerly the vice-president of United States. President Truman did not know about the existence of the project and the goal of the project until he became the president. The sad thing is, since he did not know the existence of it, I think he also did not know the power of the weapon. When he was told about the presence of a weapon that can end the war, he decided to use it. Although I stated that I would do anything to help US in the war, after looking at the result of Trinity, a slight doubt of what I was doing came to my mind. I asked myself if I’m doing the right thing. Although those doubts soon disappeared as realized that I’m not the one making decision of whether the bomb is going to be used or not, I somewhat hoped that the bomb would end up not being used. However, I was used and the war ended after two bombs named “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” was dropped in two Japanese cities called Hiroshima and Nagasaki and USSR declared war on Japan.
I’m still not sure if I did the right thing. However, I know that I am not the one who decided to drop the bomb in Japan. I know that many, in fact, almost uncountable numbers of people, died because of the bomb that I created, but I also know that more Americans would have died if I did not do what I did.
